The prettiest braided lattice apple pie. Made easy with a quick apple pie filling and premade pie crust.
I have always been a huge fan of apple pies. Really, any kind of pie (except chocolate). This pie love runs so deep that if we had done an outdoor wedding I would have skipped the cake and gone for apple pies! Luckily, I married a man who appreciates a good apple pie as well.
It only took one look at a Southern Living magazine to become obsessed with lattice pies. So when I found this picture of the prettiest apple pie I was determined to try my hand at it! One problem… One of my weaknesses in the kitchen is making pie dough. For some reason every time I have tried to make homemade pie crust it never turns out how I would like. So, any good recipes out there for a homemade pie crust??! I’d love to try some of yours!
In order to not only save time but also keep my sanity I decided to make The Prettiest Apple Pie Made Easy. So instead of making a homemade pie crust I used a premade pie crust. I ended up using two boxes of the Pilsbury premade pie crust (4 sheets) in order to get the kind of lattice detail that I wanted. But it was SO worth it to avoid the hassle and frustration of making my own only to find it crumble later on.
To start, preheat your oven to 375 degrees. Peel and thinly slice 4 medium to large apples and toss in a large bowl with the juice of one lemon. In another small bowl, mix brown sugar, cinnamon, and flour. Stir this sugar mixture onto the apples and toss until apples are evenly coated and set aside. Roll out one premade pie crust and press into a 9 inch round pie pan (I lightly grease my pan). Evenly spread your apple mixture into the dough lined pan. Make sure to get the apples as even as you can in order to make the top pretty! Place your cubed butter throughout the top of the apples. Now the fun part… Using a pastry cutter (I didn’t have a pastry cutter but my pizza cutter worked just fine), cut thirty 1/4 inch strips to make the braids, ten 1/4 inch strips, and finally two 1 inch strips. Make six braided strips and set four aside for the outer edge. Begin transferring each strip to the pie in the design that you want and weave together by folding every other strip back onto itself and then laying the next strip perpendicular. Repeat until lattice is completed. When the lattice is how you like trim the overhanging dough and then place the final four braided strips around the outer edge. Brush the top with egg wash and bake until crust is golden brown about 30-40 minutes. I hope you enjoy this pretty pie! Recipe card is below!
